Happy Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day, a U.S. holiday to honor all soldiers who died while serving in the military.

According to History.com, Memorial Day began after the Civil War and was first called Decoration Day. Families and communities decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, wreaths, and flags. In 1971, it became a national federal holiday.

The U.S. Embassy explains that Memorial Day is more than just a day off. It is a time to reflect, remember, and say thank you to those who gave everything for the country. For many Americans, it’s a very emotional and personal day.

On Wikipedia, I found out that Memorial Day is also seen as the unofficial start of summer in the U.S. Many people enjoy barbecues, beach trips, or family time—but still pause to remember fallen heroes.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac says the holiday is always on the last Monday in May, so Americans get a long weekend. But its true meaning is about honor, respect, and remembrance.

This year, I didn’t attend any events, but I read more about the holiday and took a moment to think about the people who gave their lives. I’m thankful for their service and sacrifice.
